Evolutionary Astrology for July 2021
The Santa Cruz Cosmic Weather Report
In July, we move from “June gloom” into summer here in Santa Cruz County. My garden says, “bring on the sun”! Early July is our season of Cancer, a watery sign; one that is sensitive, nurturing and healing. But the beginning of the month starts out a little rough, the culprit being fiery, passionate Mars in Leo.
Mars opposes Saturn in Aquarius at 12°21’ on July 1st. If you recall, last month’s report featured a square Saturn has been making to Uranus in Taurus. Now the square is technically in what astrologers call “orb,” within roughly three degrees of exact (Astrologers interpret orbs differently). When a faster-moving planet, such as Mars, comes into play, triggering this ongoing source of tension, we are given an extra opportunity to wrestle with the issues it is bringing into our awareness through our birthchart.
Throughout 2021, the square pushes us to awaken to what we truly value and need to survive (Uranus in Taurus) and where we need to be disciplined and work hard at innovative change (Saturn in Aquarius). The manifestation of this tension comes about differently for each person according to the houses in their chart the two planets are moving. When Mars is opposing Saturn and squares Uranus, we may have the will and gumption to take action in ways that express our true selves (Leo)! But conflict, fighting, and resistance are possible too.
The Moon in Aries, July 1st, conjuncts Chiron, adding fuel to the fire as it trines Mars and sextiles Saturn. The first week of July also includes Mars in a trine to Chiron, Sun in Cancer squaring Chiron, 12°53’, Aries, on Independence Day – Happy 4th of July! Fireworks! Look to see where similar degrees of fire signs and fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) fall in your birthchart. Folks with birthdays in the middle of these signs may especially be feeling a desire to put radical change into action, but frustration in making it so. Those born in early April, with Sun in Aries, may experience some tension at being themselves, or in relating to others in ways that empower “me”. Time for enlightened selfishness!
Venus follows Mars in her dance through Leo, first opposing Saturn, then in a trine to Chiron, then square Uranus, July 6 through 8th. Heated discussions can also be passionate and healing, but it is important to hold your ground and maintain what you feel is important for your own creative expression and the part you play in the future we are all building. We need each other, but how best to truly support each other’s authenticity? To respect freedom and individuation, and yet nurture one another?
On the New Moon July 9th in Cancer, 18°02’, we set intentions to heal ourselves, while we love and support those we consider our tribe, our family. Mercury enters Cancer midmonth and trines Jupiter in early Pisces, further opening our hearts to compassion and care. On July 13th, Venus finally meets up with Mars at 19°49’ Leo. Time to let the passions fly!! Look to see where the fire sign falls in your chart and put love and self-expression into action!
Venus enters Virgo on July 21st. The planet of artistic creativity and relationship opposes Jupiter in Pisces the following day. Meanwhile Sun initiates Leo season by moving into the sign. The Full Moon in Aquarius happens just after, on July 23rd, at 1°26’.
Jupiter seems to be playing a key role the end of July. The Full Moon degree is very close to a conjunction with 0° Aquarius, the spot in the night sky where Jupiter and Saturn joined up last December, the “Christmas star.” Something, perhaps a dream or a plan, you put into place then involved hard work along with risk. Now, the Full Moon in July supports making it real and claiming the mountain you have climbed. The month ends with Jupiter moving retrograde back into Aquarius on the 28th while Mars opposes Jupiter on the 29th. Time to reimagine those very same dreams.
Happy summertime everyone!
